HDTV Buying Guide: Making Sense of the Specifications - Before you purchase an LCD or plasma flat-panel HDTV, read our comprehensive buying advice to learn what features to consider.

HDTV Buying Guide 2011
How to buy the HDTV that's right for you.
1.HDTV Buying Guide: Select the Right Flat-Panel Technology
2.HDTV Buying Guide: Making Sense of the Specifications »
3.HDTV Buying Guide: Shopping Tips
Whether you're buying your first HDTV or replacing an older model, you'll find all sorts of new specifications and features to consider when shopping. Some of these apply to both LCD and plasma sets, while others are significant for LCDs in particular. Here's a quick overview of the different choices and what they may mean for you.
Important Specifications for LCD and Plasma HDTVs
Resolution: Almost all sets 40 inches or larger have 1080p resolution, which is 1920 by 1080 pixels. The 1080p resolution will give you the maximum detail available for almost all HD content. For some smaller HDTV sizes, 1366 by 768 pixels is often a lower-cost choice, but a 720p set has to scale 1080p images down to match its native resolution. This interpolation may introduce imaging artifacts, and the image may not appear quite as sharp or have the depth of the picture on a 1080p set.
While 720p models are available in many sizes as a lower-cost option, they remain prevalent in the 40-inches-or-smaller category. If you're shopping for a small HDTV, expect to pay about a 20 to 25 percent premium (as of this writing) for a 1080p set over a 720p set. All else being equal, we recommend that you pick a 1080p model, which will better match much of the content you can now get from broadcast, streaming, and satellite services, and will match the native resolution of a Blu-ray Disc player.
Contrast: This spec (also known as "Contrast Ratio") refers to the difference between the darkest images and the lightest images that a screen can produce; in general, it is determined by how dark the blacks are. Contrast is probably the most important factor in determining image quality after resolution. If the blacks are gray and the contrast is lower, the whole image can look washed out. If the blacks are deep and strong, however, the image will look sharper and the colors will pop.
Unfortunately, manufacturers' methods for measuring and specifying contrast are almost useless for helping you predict how the screen will look. Manufacturers use full-screen measurements, all black and all white, in a darkened room. An all-black or all-white screen is not what people watch, and in computer terms it conveys precisely zero bits of information. When you have actual content on the screen, you get internal reflections, ambient lighting effects, and other optical crosstalk that results in the light from one section of an image affecting the light levels of another. Basically, pay attention to the contrast with your eyes, but don't worry about the reported "Contrast Ratio" spec.
Internet connectivity: These days, most big-brand HDTVs offer the ability to connect to your home network's router--either through a cable or wirelessly--so that you can view content stored on the computers on your network and access content from the Internet if you have broadband service. Different sets have different features, such as Amazon, Netflix, or YouTube, so if you want a particular service, make sure that it's included before you commit to an HDTV--or find a Blu-ray player or media streaming set-top box that has the service you want. Manufacturers are adding new services all the time, even to their existing models, so it pays to get the latest information. Note that if you use a wireless connection, 802.11n will give you the fastest performance.
3D support: By now, each of the major manufacturers has a fairly wide range of 3D TVs on the market at various price points. For most prospective TV buyers, 3D isn't a necessity quite yet simply because there isn't enough 3D content out there yet. That said, if you're intrigued by ESPN 3D or simply want to future-proof your TV, there's a few things you should know about 3D before you pull out your credit card.
•Active shutter or passive 3D? There are currently two types of 3D glasses technology found in HDTVs right now, "Active shutter" and "polarized" or "passive". Active-shutter glasses are more expensive (often about $150/pair) and a bit heavier, since they're actually two small LCD screens that alternately dim each "lens" in sync with the TV by way of an infrared emitter so you can see a 3D image. Polarized glasses, on the other hand, are the kind you'll find in 3D movie theaters--in fact, some TVs will even work with the exact same glasses from the theater (which you were supposed to return, by the way). They're cheaper, lighter, and easier to wear, but they technically don't provide as high-quality an image since each lens blocks out some of the light to create the 3D image. So far, however,

Is Best Buy On Life Support? An Analysis - 3D HDTV, Blu-ray Discs, Connected TVs, LCD Flat Panel, LED LCD Flat Panels, News, Plasma, Sound Bars
The once great and expanding Best Buy (BB) has begun a path to self-destruction, with a recent quarterly loss of $1.7 billion.
Circuit City, Silo, Crazy Eddie, Incredible Universe and the Good Guys have already passed on as US consumer electronics chains. This Best Buy loss reflects a withdrawal from Europe and the closure of 11 UK superstores, its European online store, and of course, lower overall US same store sales.
But there’s more to it than that.
Let us say first that we would hate to see Best Buy disappear, largely because in many markets this would leave Wal-Mart and/or Target as the only local stores that sell TVs. However, Best Buy’s recent announcements of 50 super store closings, 400 planned layoffs at its Minnesota headquarters and the resignation of CEO Brian Dunn (with reports that he is alleged to misuse company assets in the course of a relationship with a female subordinate) do not bode well for Best Buy’s survival. When Circuit City began its downward spiral, it too cut staff and closed stores, only to accelerate its demise with lower revenues and mounting losses.
In our opinion, Best Buy created many of its own problems by continuing the same old business model in a new Internet economy. A few examples:
Best Buy maintains a two-price policy for many items, an in-store price and a lower Internet price. Best Buy continues to run its website as if it is its own competitor, not a part of the same company. This policy puts folks without Internet access at a price disadvantage. It also teaches BB brick and mortar shoppers to look at products in person, then check the bestbuy.com or other online competitors’ price, only to inevitably buy the item online. This is called “showrooming.”
Worse, if you let a blue-shirt BB salesclerk know you want to pay the lower online price, he/she has to perform a rigmarole to permit the customer to pay the online price while in-store. Remember, this is often Best Buy’s own price! Best Buy needs to have a one-price policy. Why should online shoppers have a price advantage only to continue a policy that results in bad will from in-store shoppers?
Best Buy continues to devote significant floor space to music and movies, disregarding the shift to streaming movie services, iTunes and Amazon pricing. Recently, we were denied a Wal-Mart price match on a 3D Blu-ray disc, even though it is Best Buy’s policy to match Wal-Mart disc pricing. We finally bought the disc at the Wal-Mart price when we made the purchase at another BB located next to a Wal-Mart. Why does one store honor this policy and the other does not? It’s either bad training or a directive by a given store’s manager to inflate profit margins. Ultimately, we blame it on poor oversight by BB executives.
High Margin or Low Margin Items
HDTVs are low margin items. Currently Best Buy stores offer every major brand of TV except Vizio. They also sell their store brands, Dynex and Insignia, competing directly against the name brands and reducing revenue, as the BB store brands are priced below the major TV manufacturers’ comparable products. Is Best Buy a TV maker or a retail store? We fail to see the logic of cannibalizing a sale, requiring store back-end support such as warranty parts and service. By doing this BB generates lower revenue. They also offer a free two-year warranty, negating the sale of extended warranties to Insignia TV buyers.
When a blue shirt sells a TV he pushes an ISF calibration and an extended warranty. I never hear a sales clerk explain the advantages of improved audio. Worse, the clerk can’t provide a demonstration as none of the TVs on display are connected to a sound bar or a surround sound system. These items are sitting on their own on a distant shelf. As one can never perform an audio demo online, Best Buy loses this opportunity for consumer benefit and increased revenues and profits. They will happily push a $100 HDMI cable that offers no increase in performance, when a $200 soundbar will benefit the consumer significantly, and for years to come.
The massive Best Buy TV department continues to employ overly bright lighting and poor demonstration material via an antiquated RF signal distribution system, making it impossible to see the difference between a 720p low-contrast HDTV and a top quality 1080p model. Except for observing the cosmetics of a given HDTV, a Best Buy demonstration of HDTV image quality is futile. Give consumers a home-like viewing environment with a high-quality signal and they will be able to see a difference between the store brand and a higher end TV.
Another area where Best Buy can make more profits and provide a service to its customers is the selling of high quality audio/video furniture and DVD cabinets. Right now most of the furniture and racks Best B

Contrast ratio (or how every TV manufacturer lies to you) - Contrast ratio is the most important, least understood, and endlessly aggrandized metric of a television's performance. Find out why.
Contrast ratio is the most important aspect of a TV's performance. More than any other single metric, a set's contrast ratio will be the most noticeable difference between two TVs.
That is, if you could juxtapose them. Which you can't. Or if you could compare their claimed specs. Which you can't.
Understanding what contrast ratio is and how to judge it will help you determine the best TV for your dollar. But it's a lot harder than it sounds.
In its simplest form, contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest image a TV can create and the darkest. In another way: white/black=contrast ratio. If a TV can output 45 foot-lamberts with a white screen and 0.010 ft-L with a black screen, it's said to have a contrast ratio of 4,500:1.
Unfortunately, it gets more complex from there.
There is no standard as to how to measure contrast ratio. In other words, a TV manufacturer could measure the maximum light output of 1 pixel driven at some normally unobtainable maximum, then measure that same pixel with no signal going to it at all. This hardly represents what you'd see at home, but without a standard, such trivialities don't matter to TV manufacturers.
Worse, contrast ratio numbers have gotten so extreme, there is literally no way to measure some of them. What happens more often than not is the marketing department will come up with the number it needs to sell the product. The engineers will shuffle their feet, and stare at the wall, and magically the TV has that contrast ratio.
The only way to get realistic contrast ratio numbers is from reviews, but even this isn't always accurate, as you'll see if you go here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20066138-1/contrast-ratio-or-how-every-tv-manufacturer-lies-to-you/?tag=mncol;title

HDTV Seating / Viewing Distance Chart for your Flat Panel LCD, LED, or Plasma TV

Although most of this comes down to personal preference, there are some experts that have an opinion about this. How To Improve Your HDTV Image - 3D HDTV, Connected TVs, LCD Flat Panel, LED LCD Flat Panels, Plasma

Our tips on picture optimization will go a long way to getting you a better TV picture for little or no cash outlay.

Is Your HDTV Under Performing? Here’s a Fix
Every TV has one: a button that zooms in on the picture, or changes the aspect ratio. Sometimes called View Mode, Format, Size, Zoom, or something similar, these modes have a variety of names, but all have the same purpose.
In reality most of the time there is only one “correct” mode, the other modes offering less resolution, possible artifacts, and in a few limited cases, a better picture.

For example - just say "web browser" to get online, use voice recognition to start a search, and wave a hand to control the mouse cursor and select links. Dramatically Improved Picture Quality
Samsung's 2012 line of Full HD LED and Plasma TVs continue to raise the bar in 2D and 3D picture quality. Samsung's world-class motion clarity lets viewers read the name on the jersey of a player running at top speed, detect tiny details in a rapid-fire video game and capture every bit of the action in the most dynamic car chase.
Samsung's Micro Dimming contrast enhancement will be extended to significantly more LED models this year, beginning with the LED ES6600. Micro Dimming Pro adds color and detail enhancements to the LED ES7500 for superior color and sharp detail. Micro Dimming Ultimate, available on the LED ES8000, analyzes the picture in hundreds of pieces to optimize the LED backlight and video signal for each piece in real time. This leads to a noticeable increase in brightness, richer colors and higher contrast ratio.
All Samsung Plasma TVs will have Samsung's proprietary Real Black Filter, previously only available in premium models, to deliver improved black levels and color contrast. In the higher-end E6500, E7000 and E8000 models, Samsung will incorporate the new Real Black Pro to deliver even better black levels. The technology has an unprecedented ability to absorb external light reflections through an increased wedge depth, which leads to "blacker" blacks, more-realistic pictures and higher color contrast.
With the wealth of user-generated content on video streaming apps like YouTube and Vimeo, Samsung Smart TVs also offer De-Blocking and De-Mosquito picture filters that significantly improve the viewing experience for low resolution video.
Stunning Designs, a New LED Line and the best in entertainment experience
Samsung's 2012 line of Full HD TVs continue to raise the bar in design and picture quality.

Smartphones, HDTVs Are the Most Planned CE Purchases This Year, According to CEA Study
ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smartphones and HDTVs are the top consumer electronics (CE) products U.S. households plan to purchase over the next 12 months, according to a new study released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. The 14th Annual Household CE Ownership and Market Potential Study also shows that household penetration rates for tablet computers will see their largest growth this year.
Smartphones will be the most purchased CE device this year. More than one in five (22 percent) U.S. households say they plan to purchase the device in the next 12 months. HDTVs (17 percent) and digital cameras (15 percent) are next on the list. Mobile computing will continue to be a popular purchase this year as well. Both tablet computers and notebook/laptop computers are expected to be purchased by 14 percent of U.S. households.
Tablet computers were also a leading growth category over the past 12 months. U.S. household penetration levels for tablets increased 14 percentage points from last year and represents the largest increase in the industry. Blu-ray players and digital media players also saw double digit growth in household penetration numbers:
Overall U.S. Households Percentage Point Increase Over 2011
Tablet Computers 22% 14%
Blu-ray Players 26% 12%
Digital Media Players 19% 11%
Smartphones 46% 7%
Plasma Flat-panel TVs 32% 6%
e-readers 19% 6%
Internet-enabled TVs 9% 6%
"Consistent with past research and trends we are seeing, tablets and smartphones will continue their dominance in the marketplace over the coming year," said Chris Ely, CEA's manager of industry analysis. "As consumers continue to integrate these mobile connected devices into their everyday lifestyles, we expect to see an increase in ownership of all-in-one devices and related content."
As ownership rates for connected devices increases, more households are subscribing to video rental and streaming services. Nearly 31 million U.S. households (26 percent) will be watching content streamed online and growth will continue this year as nine percent of new households are expected to subscribe to a video rental and steaming service this year.
Televisions remain the most commonly owned CE device, with 99 percent of U.S. households owning at least one TV. The average U.S. household owns 2.9 televisions. Nearly seven in ten (68 percent) U.S. households report owning at least one HDTV. In addition, half (54 percent) of U.S. households report they own at least one LCD TV and approximately one-third (32 percent) report they own at least one plasma TV.
Of the 37 CE devices surveyed, the average U.S. household owns 24, the same number as last year, and spent $961 on consumer electronics over the past 12 months, down more than $200 from last year. The average adult individually reports spending $552 on CE in the past 12 months, down $100.
"The average household continues to own electronics at a high rate, with ownership of all-in-one devices seeing significant growth," said Ely. "Consumers continue to purchase electronics, but we see a decrease in overall spending as they are buying at a bargain, seeking deals and discounts on the devices they desire, and taking advantage of declining price points for certain product categories."
The 14th Annual Household CE Ownership and Market Potential Study (April 2012) was conducted between January 26-30, 2012. It was designed and formulated by CEA Market Research, the most comprehensive source of sales data, forecasts, consumer research and historical trends for the consumer electronics industry. Please cite any information to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. The complete study is available free to CEA member companies at members.CE.org. Dolby and Philips Unveil 3D HD Format Capable of Bringing Full HD 3D to Glasses-Free 3D Devices
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) and Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHI) today unveiled Dolby® 3D, a 3D HD format and suite of technologies designed to deliver full HD 3D content to 3D-enabled devices, including glasses-free displays. Dolby 3D is being demonstrated at the NAB Show® (April 16–19, 2012) at booth SU1212.
The two leading companies have undertaken the joint project to improve the 3D viewing experience on displays of all sizes, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, and televisions. "Philips® has a long history in 3D technologies and video innovation, and Dolby has a proven track record of enabling technologies to enhance entertainment experiences. "By unveiling Dolby 3D, we introduce a 3D HD format capable of powering glasses-free 3D displays of any size, enabling broadcasters, operators, content aggregators, and device manufacturers to deliver HD-quality 3D on any device."
Ramzi Haidamus, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Dolby Laboratories, stated: "We believe that Dolby 3D can help drive the adoption of 3D—creating a comfortable, customizable, truly enjoyable glasses-free 3D viewing experience while enhancing 3D display performance. Armed with the innovative glasses-free 3D display technology from Philips, based on years of extensive research and development in the field, we plan to bring the same philosophy to 3D that Dolby has brought to the audio space—integrating our technologies and strengths throughout the entire content chain. "Dolby and Philips are committed to taking the 3D experience to the next level and delivering a high-quality solution for all 3D display devices, including today's glasses-based devices and tomorrow's glasses-free displays. Working on cutting-edge technology with two leading companies is very exciting, and I'm thrilled to lead this unique joint effort," said Guido Voltolina, General Manager of the joint project.
The focus of the project will be to work with original equipment manufacturers of display panels and entertainment devices to enhance the performance of 3D consumer devices to make viewing of 3D content just as convenient and appealing as viewing of 2D content on a high-quality screen is today. This project is uniquely positioned to enable the industry's adoption of 3D by working on standardization and licensing of the technology.
The Dolby 3D experience will seamlessly integrate into the use cases and viewing patterns of consumers on the go and in the home, making the use of 3D devices an enjoyable daily experience. Content owners and broadcast operators have the unique opportunity to differentiate their offerings by encoding 3D titles in Dolby 3D for maximum fidelity on Dolby 3D enabled devices while maintaining compatibility with existing 3D products. The system will enable a 3D HD format, including tools for 3D content creation and real-time 3D content conversion.
